CENOTE CARWASH - AKTUN HA
The proper name of Cenote Carwash is Aktun Ha which means ”Cave Water” in Mayan. There is no mystery as to how this cenote got its name…yes, it was actually used to wash cars (maily taxis) in the past.
It resembles a typical pond. Entrance into the water is easy with the water level being just a few inches below a large wooden platform.
During the summer months there is a spectacular effect created by over-blooming algae and, at other times of the year, tannic acid laden water washes into the cenote creating a thick orange-green layer on the surface which can reduces visibility drastically. As you descend you get the feeling you are crossing through mist to an unknown world. After about 2-3m/6-10ft, water suddenly becomes crystal clear and the view of lily pads, tree branches, and roots create a cool effect of an underwater forest which makes this site very popular with photographers.
To look at this cloud from inside the cavern is absolutely breathtaking as it tints the water emerald green. The light falling through the roots create an amazing light show and the cavern zone is beautifully decorated with different types of formations which are caramel and walnut brown in color.
