PADI Open Water Diver students practice how to launch a surface marker buoy (SMB). A SMB is used by scuba divers, at the end of a line from the diver, intended to indicate the diver's position to people at the surface while the diver is underwater.

The PADI Open Water Diver (OWD) certification is a full entry level certification. During the course, you will learn what you need to know to explore the underwater world using scuba (self contained underwater breathing apparatus). The OWD certification qualifies you to:

  • Dive independently while applying the knowledge and skills you learn in this course, within the limits of your training and experience.
  • Procure air fills, scuba equipment, and other services.
  • Plan, conduct, and log open water no stop (no decompression) dives when equipped properly and accompanied by a buddy in conditions with which you have training and/or experience.
  • Continue your diver training with a specialty dive in the PADI Adventures in Diving programs, and/or in PADI Specialty courses.

Most people find learning to dive a fun challenge that is neither effortless nor overly arduous.

Course Structure:

The course consists of three (3) segments: (i) confined water dives, (ii) knowledge development, and (iii) open water dives. Each segment plays an important role in learning to dive and in meeting the performance objectives you need to qualify as a diver.

Confined Water Dives: The fun begins in the confined water dives, during which you apply dive principles, and learn and practice dive procedures and skills under your instructor’s guidance and supervision. There are five (5) confined water dives that correspond with five knowledge development sections.

Knowledge Development: Knowledge development establishes the principles and basic information all divers need to have fun diving safely. It is divided into five (5) segments that you will complete primarily on your own time at your convenience using the PADI Open Water Diver manual and the PADI Open Water Diver Video.

For each segment, your instructor reviews and elaborates on the material, applying what you are learning to your specific needs, interests, and the local dive environment. At the end of each chapter, you will answer questions about the material to ensure you understand it.

Open Water Dives: The open water dives complete your training as an entry-level diver by applying and further developing your knowledge and dive skills in a dive environment under your instructor’s supervision and guidance.

You will make a minimum of four (4) scuba dives during this part of the Open Water Diver course.

Note:

All our courses apply the concept of performance based learning, which means that you progress based on meeting specific performance requirements under your instructor’s guidance. If you have difficulty, you do not “fail”—you just keep working until you meet them—but likewise, you will not get certified just because you show up. Your instructor is a trained professional committed to helping you attain your goal of becoming a diver by guiding you in meeting the course performance requirements.
