PADI SCUBA DIVER COURSE

Learn to dive anytime, anywhere

The Scuba Diver Course Is A Good Choice If You

Have limited time available

Are not sure you want to commit to a full open water course yet

For children (age of 10 years or older).

The PADI Scuba Diver certification is a limited certification intended for those who will only dive accompanied by a dive professional (divemaster or higher level rating). The Scuba Diver course is a subcourse within the Open Water Diver course which omits some of the more challenging skills that are included in the full Open Water Diver course. Though Scuba Divers follow the Open Water Diver course structure and sequence, they only complete:

  • Knowledge Development Sections 1-3
  • Confined Water Dives 1-3
  • Open Water Dives 1-2

The Scuba Diver certification qualifies you to:

  • Dive under inwater supervision of a dive professional (divemaster or higher level rating) while applying the knowledge and skills you learn in this course, within the limits of your training and experience.
  • Procure air fills, scuba equipment, and other services for use while diving supervised.
  • Plan under supervision, conduct, and log open water no stop (no decompression) dives when equipped properly and accompanied in water by a certified divemaster or higher level professional rating) in conditions with which you have training and/or experience.
  • Continue your diver training to complete the PADI Oopen Water Diver certification and some select specialty courses.

It is easy to upgrade to PADI Open Water Diver any time after completing your Scuba Diver course simply by completing the remaining course sections.

  • Able to swim
  • Medically fit for diving
  • 10 years or older
  • Maximum allowed depth is 12 m / 40 ft
  • Minimum 2-3 days (requires that students read the OWD manual (sections 1-3) ahead of training and view the OWD video)

The PADI Scuba Diver course consists of three (3) segments: (i) confined water dives, (ii) knowledge development, and (iii) open water dives. Each segment plays an important role in learning to dive and in meeting the performance objectives you need to qualify as a diver.

Confined Water Dives: This is what it’s all about – diving. There are three (3) confined water dives that correspond with three (3) knowledge development sections. Some of the essential skills you learn include:

  • Setting up your scuba gear.
  • How to get water out of your mask.
  • Entering and exiting the water.
  • Buoyancy control.
  • Safety procedures.

You’ll practice these skills with an instructor until you are comfortable. When you are ready, it’s time for your underwater adventure to begin at an open water dive site.

Knowledge Development: During the first phase of your scuba lessons, you’ll learn the basic principles of scuba diving such as

  • What to consider when planning dives.
  • How to choose the right scuba gear for you.
  • Underwater signals and other diving procedures.

You will learn this valuable information by reading it in the PADI Open Water Diver Manual. At the end of each chapter, you’ll answer questions about the material to ensure you understand it.

You will also watch videos that preview the scuba skills you will practice in confined water. In addition to the video, your instructor will demonstrate each skill for you.

Open Water Dives: The open water dives complete your training as a Scuba Diver by applying and further developing your knowledge and dive skills in a dive environment under your instructor’s supervision and guidance.

You will make a minimum of two (2) open water scuba dives during this part of the Scuba Diver course.

Note:

All our courses apply the concept of performance based learning, which means that you progress based on meeting specific performance requirements under your instructor’s guidance. If you have difficulty, you do not “fail”—you just keep working until you meet them—but likewise, you will not get certified just because you show up. Your instructor is a trained professional committed to helping you attain your goal of becoming a diver by guiding you in meeting the course performance requirements.
